A história começa por mostrar uma família, assim como tantas outras, uma menina, um pai, um rapaz, um avô, uma mãe, um tio.
Esta é a história de uma família que se faz à estrada rumo à Califórnia, numa carrinha VW amarela problemática, levando consigo as suas neuroses e problemas, para que a pequena Olive Hoover possa participar no concurso de beleza Little Miss Sunshine. Uma história divertida, comovente e real onde pode chegar à conclusão, que problemas à parte, a família é o mais importante, mesmo que nos atinja aquele nervo e nos irrite.
